Gayfeather - Blazing Star (Liatris spicata) - A native plant to midwestern and eastern meadows of North America. Indigenous peoples harvested the edible corms of this flower, utilizing its medicinal qualities. It is also traditionally used in Indigenous ceremonies as a symbol of courage and strength. Gayfeather plants launch radiant purple coloured bottlebrush spikes of flowers beginning in early summer to early fall. Blooms are highly attractive to butterflies and bees. Spikes make long-lasting fresh cut or dried flowers. Gayfeather plants are hardy perennials and can tolerate poor soil, heat, humidity, and cold winters. They perform best in full sun in a wide range of soil types. Deer tend to avoid browsing the plants. Flower spikes from early-mid summer can be cut back by half to encourage repeat blooming. The seeds are sought after by many bird species. It is recommended to divide plants every 3 to 4 years in the spring or fall. A wide range of planting options for this beautiful perennial.
