Ficus elastica ‘Robusta’, commonly known as the Rubber Plant ‘Robusta’, is a classic and enduring tropical houseplant admired for its broad, glossy green leaves, upright structure, and easy-care nature. A member of the Moraceae family and native to the tropical rainforests of Southeast Asia and India, this cultivar is valued for its bold, sculptural form and rich, evergreen presence.

The large, leathery leaves are deep emerald-green with a lustrous finish and a prominent central vein. New leaves emerge from a striking red sheath before unfurling into smooth, glossy foliage. Compared to other Ficus elastica varieties, ‘Robusta’ is noted for its particularly thick, sturdy leaves and vigorous, upright growth.

Elegant, resilient, and timelessly stylish, Ficus elastica ‘Robusta’ is a cornerstone of tropical interior design — adding structure, vitality, and sophistication to both modern and classic settings.

Ficus elastica ‘Robusta’ – Care Guide

Light

Thrives in bright, indirect light, though it adapts well to moderate lighting. For the healthiest growth and glossiest leaves, provide consistent brightness. Avoid prolonged exposure to harsh direct sunlight, which can scorch the foliage, or low-light conditions, which may slow growth and cause leaf drop.

Watering

Water when the top 3–5 cm of soil feels dry. Keep the soil lightly moist but not soggy. Overwatering is the most common issue with Rubber Plants — always ensure the pot drains freely. During winter, reduce watering frequency as growth slows.

Temperature and Humidity

  • Temperature: Prefers warmth between 18–28 °C; avoid temperatures below 15 °C.

  • Humidity: Tolerates average indoor humidity (40–60%) but appreciates occasional misting in drier conditions.

Soil and Potting

Use a well-draining, rich potting mix, such as compost blended with perlite and pine bark. This combination allows good airflow and balanced moisture retention. Repot every 2–3 years in spring, using a slightly larger pot to accommodate steady root growth.

Feeding

Feed every 4–6 weeks during spring and summer with a balanced liquid fertiliser or one formulated for foliage plants. This supports vibrant leaf colour and strong growth. Suspend feeding in autumn and winter when the plant is semi-dormant.

Pruning and Maintenance

Prune occasionally to shape and encourage branching. Remove any yellow or damaged leaves at the base. Wipe the leaves regularly with a damp cloth to remove dust and enhance their natural gloss. Rotate the plant every few weeks to ensure even growth.

Growth and Maturity

A moderate to fast grower, Ficus ‘Robusta’ can reach 2–3 metres tall indoors when mature. Its sturdy, upright growth habit and symmetrical form make it a striking focal point in any space. Over time, it can develop a woody trunk, giving it the appearance of a small indoor tree.

Common Issues

  • Yellow leaves: Overwatering or poor drainage.

  • Dropping leaves: Sudden temperature changes, low light, or inconsistent watering.

  • Brown edges: Low humidity or direct sunlight.

  • Pests: Occasionally mealybugs or scale; treat with neem oil or insecticidal soap if detected.

Background and Benefits

Native to Southeast Asia and parts of India, Ficus elastica is a canopy tree that can grow up to 30 metres tall in the wild. The ‘Robusta’ cultivar was developed for its strong, upright habit and extra-thick, glossy foliage, making it one of the most durable and adaptable houseplants available.

In addition to its visual appeal, Ficus elastica ‘Robusta’ is an effective air-purifying plant, known for filtering indoor toxins such as formaldehyde and benzene. Its bold presence adds structure and calm to interiors, symbolising resilience, vitality, and prosperity in many cultures.

Fantastic upgrade from my original stand. Base is a little bulky, but stand is versatile and sturdy.
Size: Single, Style: Free-Standing, Size: Single, Style: Free-Standing
Amazing value for this stand. I needed a stand with more degrees of freedom than the original one that came with my monitor, and this stand (which was inexpensive relative to the cost of the monitor) was a great purchase. The base of the stand is a little bulky/high, and the soft material on the bottom of it can rub off very easily if you let the stand catch the back edge of your desk. Otherwise though, the stand is extremely easy to install, and it provides far more degrees of freedom for rotation and translation than the original stand for my monitor. Now my monitor is sitting at a comfortable viewing angle closer to my desk tilted slightly upwards toward me. Just keep in mind that you have to tighten down the height and tilt adjustments (the things that would be affected by gravity). So, if you want to adjust those frequently, this stand might not be a great fit for you. That said, it does provide a hidden but easy-to-access spot to store the keys needed to loosen it up to make those adjustments. So, if you need to make those adjustments, you'll always have quick access to the necessary tools. Highly recommended for its price in particular.

    A Solid Monitor Stand
    Size: Single, Style: Free-Standing
This is an extremely sturdy monitor stand. Easily assembled in less than 20 minutes. Instructions were simple. The hex tools came with the stand, but you just need a Nr 2 Phillips Screwdriver for the bolts mounting the VESA plate to the monitor. Take note that this stand has a heavy base to hold larger/heavier monitors up to 22 lbs, but does not take a lot of space. I chose this variant so that it could handle my heavy 24-inch Planar monitor. The included cable management clip was a nice touch. Rotation and tilt feature moves easily and has decent range. I'm very happy with my purchase and it was available for overnight shipment in my region.

WALI Dual Monitor Stand: A Solid, Space-Saving Base Camp
    Size: Dual, Style: Free-Standing
WALI Dual Monitor Stand: A Solid, Space-Saving Base Camp I needed to reclaim some real estate on my crowded desk, and this WALI freestanding mount did the trick. It's a straightforward, no-frills solution that holds my two 24-inch monitors securely and opens up a ton of space underneath. Assembly is intuitive, though having a second pair of hands is helpful when you're attaching the monitors to avoid any tipping. The all-metal construction feels sturdy and reliable. The adjustments are basic but effective—you can raise or lower both monitors together on the central pole and tilt or swivel them individually to get the angles just right. The included cable management clips are a nice touch for keeping things tidy. The key thing to understand with any freestanding mount is balance. If you extend the arms all the way out toward you, the whole unit can get top-heavy and want to tip forward. I keep my monitors positioned more centered over the heavy base, and it's perfectly stable. It's not meant for dramatic, extended poses. For the price, it's fantastic value. It doesn't have the infinite, fluid adjustability of high-end gas-spring arms, but it doesn't need to. It lifts your monitors, frees up your desk, and does its job without any fuss. Bottom Line: An excellent, budget-friendly way to lift two monitors and dramatically increase your usable desk space. Just be mindful of the center of gravity and don't expect ultra-flexible, independent positioning.

Easily supports a pair of 26" displays
    Size: Dual, Style: Free-Standing
I have no complaints with this stand. It is not as nice as the Inland brand sold at MicroCenter, but it does its job. It beats the price of the MicroCenter one, thats for sure. It comes with all the hardware you might need, even long screws and bushings if you have a display that needs them. Assembly was quick. It comes mostly assembled anyway. You have to put the bottom on the post then attach the assembled arms to the post. Setting up can be a challenge but with help, its easy. After mounting the bracket on the back of the displays, you just slide them into the receiver on the arms. Once mounted, adjusting the position is simple, but can take a while as there are several joints which can be positioned to angle the displays as you like. The cord clips do an OK job of cord management, but the clips are not as good as the Inland ones. They do the job, but not as durable. I broke the one that goes on the post, but I tried getting it to hold a wad of wire. My fault. I recommend this stand.
