Plant Care
-
Sunlight - Rosemary plants need a lot of sunlight and prefer full sunlight. If you're growing rosemary indoors, you can use an artificial grow light.
-
Temperature and humidity - Rosemary plants prefer warm temperatures and average humidity levels between 55 and 80 degrees. Most rosemary types can tolerate strong heat, but cannot tolerate temperatures below 30 degrees.
-
Watering - Rosemary plants are drought-tolerant and don't require constant watering. However, you should keep rosemary plants well watered during dry spells.
-
Fertilizing - Rosemary plants don't need fertilizer, but you can feed them with a general fertilizer during the growing season. Over-fertilizing can cause rosemary plants to grow too fast and have less desirable flavor. A better way to fertilize rosemary is to add fresh compost to the soil before planting.
-
Pruning - In the spring, you can prune rosemary shrubs by pruning back their main stems by half of their length. Pruning keeps the plant compact, allows for airflow, and encourages fresh growth.
-
Potting - Rosemary plants have a deep root system, so choose a pot that is at least 12 inches deep and 12 inches wide. The pot should also have drainage holes at the bottom to allow water to drain out.
-
Winter care - In cold winters, you can bring rosemary plants under cover for protection.
