This species exhibits considerable variation in tubercle size and shape, with occasional terminal areoles at the tips. The plant features flattened, spherical stems in shades of gray-green, blue-green, or yellow-green, with warts that are pointed or sharp-tipped and may have areoles. Its flowers range in color from cream to light yellow, white with a possible red or pinkish-red stripe.
