Nine Lebanese babies received a second chance at life this week when a Swiss medical team arrived in Beirut to perform open-heart surgeries for free, reported the Daily Star newspaper Saturday.
The Heart for All Swiss foundation and the University Hospital in Geneva sent the team, which has operated on children aged five months to 15 months since Monday, said the paper.
President of the foundation, Afksendiyosmr Kalangos, said that the team was on a humanitarian mission.
He said babies with heart defects could die unless properly treated.
In addition to the surgeries, an agreement was signed between the University Hospital in Geneva and a Lebanese health center to train the center’s staff on how to treat heart problems in children, said Kalangos.
Kalangos said more missions would be conducted “when a complete Lebanese team is trained and ready,” added the paper.
The Heart for All foundation was created in 1998, and has about 100 members worldwide.
The non-profit foundation has provided its free services in Lebanon, Mozambique, Morocco, Eritrea, and Georgia, and intends to do the same for Ethiopia and Togo -- Albawaba.com
